A Threshold Day for Fathers and Sons (Ages 12–14)

In every boy’s life, there comes a time when he must begin to step beyond childhood and take his first, true steps toward manhood.

In Iron John, Robert Bly speaks of the deep, ancient bond between fathers and sons—the passing down of wisdom, strength, and the untamed spirit of the wild man within. This retreat is a chance to honour that bond in a real, tangible way.

Set in nature near Gorey, Co. Wexford, this one-day retreat invites fathers and sons (ages 12–14) to step away from the noise and distractions of everyday life and into an experience of:

  • Connection
  • Adventure
  • Initiation

It’s a day to look each other in the eye, to play, to challenge, to listen, and to mark this important threshold together.

Why a Rite of Passage?

Modern life often rushes boys into adulthood without real guidance or meaningful initiation. At the same time, many men carry the sense that something important was missed in their own journey.

This day offers:

  • clear, positive rite of passage marking the move from boyhood toward young manhood
  • shared experience where father and son can feel proud of one another
  • living bridge between generations—what has been learned, and what is being passed on

Rather than a lecture or a “talking-to”, this is about doing something together—in nature, with other fathers and sons, in a well-held space.

What the Day Will Involve

Over the course of the day, we will weave together:

  • Arrival & Welcome Circle
Simple, grounding introductions so everyone feels at ease. Fathers and sons are welcomed as they are—no performances, no pressure.
  • Shared Challenges & Games
Playful physical and team-based activities to build trust, spark laughter, and bring out courage and cooperation.
  • Time on the Land
Gentle time in nature together—walks, simple tasks, and noticing the landscape as a mirror for what is changing inside.
  • Father & Son Time
Guided exercises where fathers and sons speak to each other in a more intentional way: appreciation, honest words, and listening that goes a bit deeper than usual.
  • Ritual & Marking the Threshold
A simple, age-appropriate rite of passage where boys are invited to step forward and be acknowledged; and fathers are supported to bless, affirm, and encourage them.
  • Closing Circle & Integration
Gathering the threads of the day so that what happens here can continue at home.

(All activities are designed to be safe, age-appropriate, and do not require any special level of fitness.)

Who Is This For?

This retreat is for:

  • Fathers with sons aged 12–14 (we are open to ages either side, lets chat)
  • Step-fathers, adoptive fathers, or other father-figures in a boy’s life (e.g. uncle, grandfather) are also welcome by arrangement
  • Boys who may be:
    • Curious, shy, sensitive, energetic, or unsure—it’s all welcome
    • Needing a day “off screens” and out in nature
    • Standing at the edge of adolescence and ready for something that feels real

You don’t need any previous experience with retreats or men’s work. You just need a willingness to show up, participate, and respect the group.

Frequently Asked Questions

My son is a bit shy / anxious. Will he be okay?
Yes. The day is designed to be gentle, welcoming, and not overwhelming. There will be no pressure to “perform” or speak in front of the group beyond what feels comfortable. Shyness is welcome.

We’re not very “outdoorsy”. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Activities are simple and accessible. As long as you can walk on uneven ground and be outside for periods of time, you’ll be fine.

We’re not living together as father and son. Can we still come?
Yes. This day can actually be particularly meaningful in separated families. If there are any specific sensitivities or questions, you’re welcome to get in touch beforehand.

Can another male caregiver attend instead of a biological father?
Yes. A grandfather, uncle, or other committed male mentor can come in place of a father, as long as the boy and his caregivers are in agreement.

Is this therapy or religious?
No. This is not therapy, nor is it tied to any one religious tradition. It is a carefully held, human-scale rite of passage rooted in nature, story, and healthy masculinity.
